New Skills Academy

The New Skills Academy was conceived as Participants in our Individual Development Accounts were able to secure administrative opportunities for employment using financial skills that were developed as a result of their involvement.  Our Observations motivated us to create a more intentional format for developing skills for Adults who felt that the required skills for higher employment were not great. The New Skills Academy focuses on building the skills necessary to obtain entry level general administrative employment in offices and banks.

How does it work?
Participants are required to attend classes 4 days a week over a 6 month period. Each “student” will be assessed to determine the skills they must develop over that time period, so the curriculum can accommodate any individual’s need. Students will be taught by professional instructors staffed by Lawrence Community Works and staff from Northern Essex Community College.

What will I have to learn?
Participants will be involved in basic accounting, computer technology, filing as well as soft skills development for the professional workplace (business etiquette, phone and customer service skills). ESL classes will be provided for those needing English language skill improvements.

I am interested but I am a single parent?
                Child Care will be provided.

How do I graduate?
Students who successfully complete the coursework will be placed in temporary internship for a few weeks to help them test their new skills and to allow them to experience different work environments. Afterwards student will receive certification of completion and graduation.

What do I do after I graduate?
Graduates will be expected to conduct their own job searches and obtain permanent employment. The FAB staff will work to assist in securing employment by developing partnerships with companies in the greater Lawrence area who need entry level staff.

… And now that I have my Job?
Once participants are employed, their peer cohort will continue to meet on a quarterly basis to provide motivational and peer support, while also meeting with FAB staff for credit and budget counseling.
